What Will Happen If Obama Loses?

As I travel around the feminists and pro-Hillary sites (odd union, considering that Hillary has never been much of a feminist) I am confronted with a lot of "Obama won't win unless" articles, discussions, and arguments.

However, I wonder why feminists and the pro-Hillary die hards aren't writing articles, or having discussions, about what will happen if Obama doesn't win and, conversely, If McCain becomes President?

If Obama doesn't win, I think it would be safe to say that the Democratic Party would be finished, and it would take decades for another progressive party to rise from its ashes. A third Democratic defeat, coupled with the Republicans some how managing to avoid suffering the consequences of the public's dissatisfaction with the Iraq war, would prove (once and for and all) that the Democrats can never get anything done, and its fragile coalition would be shattered irreconcilably. The African Americans, the gay rights crowd, the women's rights crowd, the college educated liberals, and the near socialistic thinkers would, after a third Democratic failure (and six out of the last eight), go in separate directions, forming their own caucuses, or aligning with the party in power; the Republicans. Can you really imagine African Americans (who are increasingly become more socially conservative) voting in 2012 for the party that failed them so miserably in 2008? Why would they not find common ground with the party that ran Lynn Swann and Ken Blackwell in 2006? Like wise for the college educated liberals, who are not going to sit around with their thumbs up their ass for four years, they are going to work with the party in power (just like they did with Reagan and Bush in the 80s).

That would leave us with the socialistic thinkers, the radical feminists, and the homosexual community. Does anyone ever think that is going to be a winning coalition?

I could list off all of the reasons why feminists, gays, and socialistic thinkers desperately need an Obama victory in 2008, but why go to all that trouble?

If you all want to sabotage Obama's campaign for the White House, get to it, you all have that right, but in the end it won't do you all any good at all.

Personally I am honor bound to follow the orders of whoever is Commander in Chief, which I am hoping will be President Obama.

But I am going to end this diary with a personal question that I hope the Hillary die-hards will spend some time thinking about. How much do you hate being aligned with black people in a common future goal? If your hatred of Obama is so strong, then I fear that a progressive/feminist movement in America is doomed to failure.

Okay. You've got my attention. Why don't you tell this woman just wha' the heck a feminist is. Go on. I'm sure you can do it.

I've been amazed at the audacity of "know it all " that has been on these boards.

Go on tell us all what being a femininist is.

Oh to paraphrase another diary.

I won't be threatened for my vote.

Nor will I be scared out of my vote.

If that's all you got. I'll go find a supporter of Sen Obama who will try some of that "Audacity of Hope" I keep hearing about. This is the "Audacity of the Monster Under the bed"

Kind of like how we found ourselves in Iraq.

Socialistic thinkers (none / 0)

Mainly unionists, and those that favor social programs such as medicare and medicade.
However, most socialistic thinkers refuse to acknowledge that they are socialistic thinkers, just like Liberals refuse to admit that they are liberals.

No, he wouldn't. (2.00 / 3)

Because this is the same person who wrote this sexist rant:

The most disheartening trend of Hillary Clinton's, as of late, has been her tactic of standing in front of powerful male surrogates, and then bashing Obama. She did this with Gov. Strickland in Ohio, in which she said shame on you Obama, and yesterday with Senator Bayh, when she called Obama's comment elitist, and again today with congressman Paul E. Kanjorski, when she again called Obama's comments elitist. Obviously Clinton doesn't feel that when standing alone she will be taken seriously, which begs the question; which man would she have to have standing behind her, if she was elected president?

I can't even remember whether that was the worst of it. Unfortunately, after enough people called him a sexist, he deleted the diary, so I can't link you to it. The diary was titled, "A look at what a Hillary Presidency could look like." This is part of the comment thread, though. The new archiving process makes it difficult to find things.

Re: Socialistic thinkers (2.00 / 2)

Trade unionists are not socialists, or 'socialistic' whatever that means.  If anything, the trade unions in this country are an amalgam of two traditions: anarcho-syndicalism (which is opposed to government control) with a dash of troskyism primarily as a state of permanent revolustion, and much more prominently the guilds system, which primarily organizes independent and adversarial bargaining positions often in opposition to government.  This country does not have a labor unionist party such as once played prominent roles in European politics or Latin America.  Labor unions in this country may pressure government for favorable regulation and legislation, but they are not fundamentally in favor of a state run economy.

As for government organized social programs, you have a bit of a better case there, but only if you employ an extremely watered down notion of socialism.  Japan has comprehensive nationalized social services, but not many economists would call Japan a 'socialistic' country.  Now, if you want to argue that many democrats seek to emulate social democratic models of northern and western Europe, that's fair.  But social democracy is not synonymous with socialism.  Perhaps this fuzziness is why you employ the irregular adjectival 'socialistic,' when 'socialist' suffices to serve as a modifier, but again has a more meaningfully defined history.

Oh, I also obviously agree with all those here that think Hillary Clinton is indeed a feminist.  In fact, feminists the world over agree.  Certainly there are odd feminist thinkers like Paglia that argue she represents a problematic form of feminism (I don't agree for the most part) but if she's not a feminist then Clapton isn't a guitarist.

I was simply going to write unionists (none / 0)

But I wanted to include unionists with people that favor government programs, as the two groups of people are usually one and the same.
They are not socialists or socialistic, but that they are thinkers that think in terms of what could be considered socialistic. Thus I called them socialistic thinkers (this is actually the group I most identify with).
The problem with the various groups within the Democratic Party is that most of them refuse to admit who they really identify with. Feminists don't want to admit that they are feminists, gays often times stay in the closet, liberals hate being labeled liberals, and the those that are unionists or favor social programs hate to be associated with the word socialist.
Only the African Americans, who vote 80-90% Democratic, are proud of who they are.

And the Democratic party is already finished because of the way they treated the Clintons, seniors, the working class, the shift workers, the sick, and party loyalists.

Don't forget the UN black helicopters and the CIA! Their fingerprints are all over this.

Here's what I think happened: The special effects guys who faked the moon landing, financed by international bankers, faked the footage of huge crowds gathering to hear Obama speak. Genetically modified corn crops released mind-controlling nanobots into the brains of millions of Iowans, winning Obama the caucus there. Harold Ickes has an evil twin who voted to strip Michigan and Florida of their delegates. Zombie Rasputin was brought cast a spell on Senator Clinton leading her to believe that she had been under sniper fire in Bosnia. Yetis were charged with securing Obama's massive win in Alaska, and he would have won in New Jersey if only the Jersey Devil hadn't had to leave town at the last minute.

I completely understand your fears about another Carter presidency.  But the past is not necessarily prologue and, while fearing a reprise of Carter, we can cross our fingers and, dare I say it, indulge in the audacity of hope.

Look at it this way:  we've had a fool of the opposite party in the White House for the last eight years.  Should Obama prove to be a fool, it's still a step in the right direction and he's got to be better than McCain.

Your diary is weird and I don't get what you are going for.  I don't have a problem being aligned with a black person since I happen to give birth to one who has the same genetic makeup as Obama (white mother, black father).  I consider myself to be a feminist and I certainly consider Hillary Clinton to be a feminist.

I don't think Obama losing would mean the end of the Democratic party either.  If that travesty that was 2000 didn't kill the Democrats nothing will.  The thing that jeopardizes our party more than an Obama win/loss is the absolutely pathetic leadership we currently have in Congress.  They are the worst kind of enablers - they talk a big story but they are doing George Bush's bidding.  Blech.

But's lets face it, Democrats should be thankful this is not a 50/50 election, otherwise we would have our asses handed to us by McCain. All Obama has to do is run a strong campaign, avoid any major controversies and make sure for the life of him, this election is not close.

Short answer: people like you will be held responsible for Obama losing.

Personally, I just can't think highly of a onetime professor of constitutional law who can't stand up for the 14th Amendment.

It's funny how people like you sold Obama as a 'mapchanger' and Hope And Change.  Now you have a centrist candidate, you have the Gore/Kerry map of swing states, his polling numbers match Generic Democrat, and your best argument is a Lesser Evil argument.

Excuse me if I'm underwhelmed.

by killjoy on Thu Jun 12, 2008 at 02:30:13 AM EST

What? (none / 0)

"Personally, I just can't think highly of a onetime professor of constitutional law who can't stand up for the 14th Amendment."
???
The Fourteenth Amendment (Amendment XIV) to the United States Constitution is one of the post-Civil War amendments (known as the Reconstruction Amendments), first intended to secure rights for former slaves. It includes the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses, among others. It was proposed on June 13, 1866, and was ratified on July 9, 1868. It is perhaps the most significant structural change to the Constitution since the passage of the United States Bill of Rights.

The amendment provides a broad definition of United States citizenship, superseding the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Dred Scott v. Sandford that had excluded African Americans. The amendment requires states to provide equal protection under the law to all persons within their jurisdictions and was used in the mid-20th century to dismantle legal segregation, as in Brown v. Board of Education. Its Due Process Clause has been the basis of much important and controversial case law regarding privacy rights, abortion (see Roe v. Wade), and other issues.

The other two post-Civil War amendments are the Thirteenth Amendment (banning slavery) and the Fifteenth Amendment (banning race-based voting qualifications). According to Supreme Court Justice Noah Swayne, "Fairly construed, these amendments may be said to rise to the dignity of a new Magna Carta."
From Wikipedia.org

Provide a link that Obama doesn't speak highly of the amendment that gives him rights, before you make such an audacious claim.
If Obama loses it will be because of the stupid things you write.

The Gore/Kerry map? Did that map include Colorado and Virginia? Perhaps I just don't know what that map was supposed to be.

And I have no idea what you mean concerning the 14th amendment.

And the only people who will be responsible for Obama losing if he loses, are the people who won't vote for him. That's what democracy is all about: You are responsible for your own vote.

You and the rest of the Obama-crats will whine that it was all Hillary's fault.

And if you guys give him enough money he will run ads whining about how it wasn't his fault and as usual you/he won't accept responsibility fir the loss.

LOL and you can stand in that line with the Republicans who've been complaining that it's all the Clinton's fault for the last 2 terms.

You're saying the same thing as ElRushbo and Hannity.

Re: What Will Happen If Obama Loses? (none / 0)

I'm  a Hillary supporter but like most of us I think we've adjusted to the fact that Obama is the nominee but I'm bound to say I'm surprised at the degree of resistance to him that is still out there. It will probably come around but it needs to because despite all the euphoria about this latest NBC poll I didn't think it was anything to shout about given the weaknesses of Republicans. I've always thought it would be tight and he needs her on the ticket although many of the most fanatical supporters seem to have the attitude they'd rather lose without her than win with her which I find bizarre but there it is. I'll be watching the polls closely but if he hasn't got a double digit lead by the end of June the need for her to join the ticket will become imperative.
