WI-Senate: Final field set Hotlist

Yesterday was the final day to file Nomination Papers in Wisconsin.

I qualified for  the Senate ballot with 2,178 valid signatures, and another 63 with correctable errors, against a requirement of 2,000.

Also making the ballot, Republican Attorney Robert Gerald Lorge, and the Green Party's Rae Vogeler.

Libertarian Dave Redick, who'd started his run as an anti-war Republican, but jumped after being dissed at their State Convention, apparently fell short in circulating papers, as he did not file.

Republican State Senator Glen Grothman provided the suspense, arriving at the State Elections Board just after filing closed. (cont)

Grothman had only entered the race last weekend. He claimed to have ammassed 3,000 signatures, but to have decided not to make a run for fear that a poor showing would  be considered a repudiation of his "Conservative" principles.

He worried that he'd be entering late, without a professional Campaign Manager or support staff in place,and that while the RSCC had offered pros, they'd be the leftovers.

Finally, just after the assembled reporters had turned off their tapes, he said "I'm throwing my support to Ben Masel."

Grothman did not, however, donate the $1 maximum I'm accepting for my swelling campaign coffers.

The big suspense from my point of view was the filing for the House.  With both sides hovering at 7 of the eight seats covered, Republican Dave Magnum filed in CD 2 but Democrat John Curry failed to make it in Cd 6. But then again, Ben, I;ve been watching the House filings.  I did make a note of your filing.

BTW, 14 Democrats filed vs. just 11 Republicans.  The Democrats massed in two CDs, WI-1 (with 5 candidates) and WI-8 (with 3).  Talk about the alpha and the omega.

Too bad about Curry (none / 0)

Meeting him at the State Convention, I promised I'd spend a day in Oshkosh, collecting his signatures as well as my own. Alas, I failed to deliver on that commitment.

Sorry you didn't win!  Now I think we all need to get behind Rae Vogeler.  As much as I love Grandpa Munster, I don't think we need him in the Senate.  It will be interesting to watch him on Wisconsin Public Television, though, trying to pretend he has something to say that is different from Robert Lorge's spiel!  Will they link arms and sing a tearful rendition of "Proud to Be an American"?
