Impeachment Scenario: President Leach

So long as Hastert is Speaker, there'll be no Impeachment, and if he were to take the Presidency, it wouldn't be worth it. But...

The Speaker of the House serves at the sufferance of a majority of the House, not the majority Party.

House Dems make an offer to Iowa Rep. Jim Leach: Bring in 14 more of your Republican colleagues, we'll vote for you as Speaker, and split Committee chairs, governing as a coalition.

Then Impeach Cheney and Bush, with another of the "GOP  in exile" group taking the Speaker slot. (With Leach leaving the House for the Presidency, it'd take one more House Republican at this point.)

Clever, but... (none / 0)

... don't forget, it takes 2/3 of the Senate to convict.

Not worth it? (none / 0)

You've got a good imagination, I like your thinking.  However, I've got to respond to saying that having Hastert as President "wouldn't be worth it."  Isn't holding our leaders accountable for their crimes and misgovernance the right thing to do, regardless of political results?  I would say yes, unequivocally.

Not only in the present day, but as a lesson to our future leaders, and to prevent the same criminals from acting again. For instance, if many of the Iran-Contra criminals had not been given a bye in the 80's, they wouldn't now be in the present administration, and those like them would be more hesitant (I hope).

And yes, Hastert would be a terrible President, but then look what we have now.  And given how he would come to power, he would be a very cautious and circumspect leader.

Of course, as you say, ain't gonna happen.  But it would be worth it.

Where does the Senate enter into this? (none / 0)

They convict, not the House.

I'd been thinking the same thing... (none / 0)

that in a possible impeachment, we'd have to first elect Chris Shays or Jim Leach or Jim Matheson (D-UT) or someone like that as Speaker of the House.

And the VP would need to come from the other party; some kind of RINO/DINO pairing would need to be worked out.

Genius! (none / 0)

You could create a bumper sticker that says--Vote Democratic in 2006 to Impeach!

I have mulled this in the past...and posted elsewhere...it is "doable", under the right circumstances...catch him in bed with a dead girl or a live boy...but still...

Leach..Ok..but I still have funny taste in my mouth left over from '98, but...in concept...

Chris Shays...?
